The UK Geothermal Decision Intelligence Study is an independent industry research initiative led by APADUS.
The study aims to better understand how organisations involved in geothermal and mine-water heat projects make technical decisions, manage uncertainty and evaluate engineering evidence throughout the project lifecycle.
The findings will help identify common industry challenges and inform future research into practical decision-support approaches for complex engineering projects.
Geothermal development requires decisions across multiple technical disciplines, including geology, reservoir engineering, drilling, environmental assessment, economics and project delivery.
These decisions are often made using diverse datasets, specialist software and expert judgement. While this has enabled successful projects, the increasing complexity of the energy transition creates opportunities to improve how technical evidence is integrated and how uncertainty is communicated during decision-making.
This study seeks to understand current practice directly from organisations working in the sector.
